Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Electric Cars, Sustainable Energy, the Hyperloop, and Artificial Intelligence

Posted on September 18, 2015 by Matt Pressman

Recently, CNN Money* reporter Rachel Crane sat down with Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk to get his views on issues he considers critical to our future. They produced a series of short videos that provide a unique and important look into some exciting (and daunting) issues we should consider as we look forward.

So, what does the future hold? If you listen to Musk's point of view, you'll be both delighted and cautious about some issues he's keeping a close eye on -- some of these issues he's tackling head-on, others he's monitoring closely. Musk is a fascinating (and brilliant) thinker, we're thrilled to hear his views on these matters...

Elon Musk on Electric Cars and Sustainable Energy

As CEO of Tesla Motors, we're hyper-aware of Musk's efforts to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. He's also the Chairman of Solar City where he's tackling a sustainable solution for energy production as well. In this video, Musk explains, "The biggest problem that Earth faces this century… is sustainable energy production and consumption." In addition to this interview, check out the graphs below to see the lightening-fast growth of electric charging stations in the U.S. between 2000 and 2015 -- this rapid growth (50 in 2000, 348 in 2010, and 10,371 this year) remains both encouraging and exciting.

Elon Musk on the Hyperloop

Although Musk isn't funding this particular project, his initial "proposal" for the Hyperloop concept remains the catalyst for what might be a new mode of transportation in the coming years. In the first video below, Musk explains the innovation and (relative) simplicity of his idea. In the second video, we see those attempting to transform the Hyperloop idea into reality. Then, take look at how fast the Hyperloop would transport you between major metropolitan centers here in the U.S.

Elon Musk on Artificial Intelligence

Elon Musk is pushing Tesla Motors' autonomous driving technology at an extremely rapid rate. And, he has invested in some pioneering companies (and non-profits) that are on the forefront of advancing Artificial Intelligence. Yet, he remains nervous about a "super-intelligence" becoming a significant threat to humanity. Listen to his views on this important issue. And, also, take a look below at the evolution of some landmark supercomputers over the years...

These Elon Musk interviews were part of a larger, more comprehensive effort from CNN Money* to address future issues. Nevertheless, it was Elon Musk's particular "take" on these matters that definitely provoke and engage us as we (as Tesla owners) envision a more constructive and hopeful future for humanity at large.
