There are times when you travel to places that do not have easy access to Superchargers. In such cases, you’ll need to charge from a electrical source that may not accommodate the charging cable adapters that come standard with your Model X. For long road trips to a friend or relative’s house, you may need access to 240V power source when you arrive. The best option is often your friend or relative’s clothes dryer (or A/C) outlet, alternatively you may find yourself at an RV Park—a 30 amp power source that can provide worthwhile charging for your vehicle. To accomplish this, you’ll need one of our Charging Adapters designed to allow you to connect your Tesla charging cable to a NEMA 10-30P dryer outlet, NEMA 6-30P A/C outlet, or a TT-30P RV Power outlet.

Description

For long road trips to a friend or relative’s house, or if you are not along a route that has access to a supercharger, many Tesla owners stop at RV parks and need access to 240V power source when you arrive to acquire a few hours charging. The best option is often your friend or relative’s clothes dryer receptacle—a 30 amp power source that can provide worthwhile charging for your vehicle. Alternatively, you may be able to use an air conditioner 240 volt outlet or the RV Power outlet as your power source.

The Dryer Adapter plugs directly into a NEMA 10-30P outlet (commonly used for clothes driers). The A/C adapter plugs directly into a NEMA 6-30P outlet (commonly used for large window A/C units and some other commercial equipment). The RV Power adapter plugs directly into the RV site NEMA TT-30P outlet (receptacle).You then plug your Tesla charging cable with its NEMA 14-50 plug into to the NEMA 14-50 end of the adapter and you have access to the amps you’ll need to charge your car.

The Charging Adapters are built with UL certified components and makes use of a pigtail design that allows for greater flexibility when you connect the adapter to both the power source and the Tesla charging cable.

All charging adapters have been designed for North American electrical outlets. They will not work in any other international location and should not be ordered if your Tesla vehicle resides in an international location.

All charging cable adapters are made from UL approved components and are designed to fit the following receptacle types:

Clothes Dryer: NEMA 14-50 to NEMA 10-30 (pigtail)

240V A/C: NEMA 14-50 to NEMA 6-30 (pigtail)

RV Power: NEMA 14-50 to NEMA TT-30P (pigtail)

The "pigtail" design of the adapter allows it to be used in tight places where a standard plug adapter might be problematic.

FAQ

How do these charging adapters work?

The Tesla charging cable used the NEMA 14-50 standard, meaning that the male end of the adapter fits into a NEMA 14-50 plug and can then allow the Tesla charging cable to be plugged into a Cloth Dryer receptacle (NEMA 10-30P) or some air conditioner electrical outlets (NEMA 6-30P).

Can you guarantee that the adapters you offer will fit power sources at all RV parks or in all residences?

The RV and Clothes Dryer Adapters we offer are the most commonly encountered in the wild. However, there are dozens of potential outlet configurations. We cannot guarantee that the adapter will fit in a specific (and unusual) situation.

Why is a “pigtail” adapter better that a simple plug adapter?

A pigtail allows more range of motion in situations where it is difficult to plug the charging cable into a power source due to structural elements around the receptacle, a weather cover that sits over the receptacle or any other impediment that makes plug in difficult.

How does this adapter work?

Your Tesla charging cable (NEMA 14-50) plugs into the female end of the adapter (which is also NEMA 14-50). The male end of the adapter then plugs into the receptacle (outlet) type for which the adapter was designed (e.g., a Dryer Vent adapter will be plugged into a 240 V dryer vent outlet).

Are these adapters and extension chords UL rated?

Each of the components in all adapters and extension chords are UL rated.

Can you provide a picture of the outlet configurations that I can access if I use one or more of your adapters?

Can I charge my car quickly using these adapters?

Charging speed (measured as miles of range per hour of charging) is a function of the number of amps delivered to your battery by the charging circuit. If you charge from a 40 amp circuit, you’ll charge at a rate of about 27 to 30 miles of range per hour. For 30 amp circuits, such as those used for many clothes driers and A/C units, you’ll charge at a lower rate of about 18 - 20 miles of range per hour.

How far can my vehicle be from the power source?

If you use only the Tesla standard charging cable, your vehicle must be within approximately 20 feet of the power source. If you add an extension cord (available here) to the standard Tesla charging cable, your vehicle must be approximately 50 feet or less from the charging source.

Is it possible to run into a situation where I have the right adapter, but charging doesn’t work?

Tesla vehicles are relatively sensitive to the quality of the power supply. If there is significant voltage variation or other anomalies, charging may not occur.

Will these adapters or extension cord work in Europe or other international locations?

No. All charging adapters have been designed for North American electrical outlets. They will not work in any other international location and should not be ordered if your Tesla vehicle resides in an international location.

Can I use my charging adapter to power other devices besides my Tesla?

Due to the wiring requirements for Tesla charging equipment, it is unsafe and not recommended that an EV adapter be used for anything else besides with electric vehicles. Please label and store all adapters with other EV charging equipment.
