What Were the Best-Selling EVs in the First Half of 2023?

Tesla has dominated the top 10 best-selling electric vehicles in the U.S. for the first half of this year. The Model Y and Model 3 were the first- and second-best-sellers in the six-month period, with Tesla's economy-level sedan outselling the third-place EV by a margin of over three times.

Estimates hold that the Tesla Model Y and 3 sold 200,520 units and 112,791 units, respectively, in the first half of 2023, as Business Insider reports. Tesla currently groups vehicle classes for quarterly reports, meaning that it only released production and delivery data for the Model 3 and Y combined, as well as the Model S and X combined. In Q2 alone, Tesla delivered 19,225 Model S and X units, delivering an impressive 466,915 Model 3 and Y units, according to the company.

Behind the Model 3 and Y on EV sales in the first half of 2023 were the Chevy Bolt with just 33,659 units sold, as followed by the Rivian R1T (16,452). The Volkswagen ID.4 (16,448) landed fifth in the rankings, with the Ford Mustang Mach-E (14,040) and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (13,641) landing in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Tesla’s other two passenger models currently offered include the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV, which placed eighth and ninth on the ranking, just ahead of the Ford F-Series pickup. Estimates hold that the Model X sold 13,475 units and that the Model S sold 10,106 units, while the conglomerate of Ford F-150 Lightning pickups had 8,757 sales.

The news of Tesla landing four spots on the top 10 chart comes after the automaker beat on estimates for Q2 deliveries. It also comes after a broad range of price reductions across Tesla’s lineup, driving increased demand, and after numerous charging hardware partnerships have been announced in recent weeks.
