BMW Overtakes Tesla in Europe: A New EV Champion Emerges
For the first time, BMW has outpaced Tesla in the European electric vehicle (EV) market. In July, BMW sold 14,869 EVs across Europe, surpassing Tesla's 14,561 units. Although BMW's lead is just 308 vehicles, it marks a significant shift in the EV landscape, with the German automaker gaining ground as a major player.
Tesla's Dip in Europe
Tesla faced a slight downturn in July, with sales of its popular Model Y and Model 3 dropping. The Model Y saw a 16% decrease, with 9,544 units sold, while Model 3 sales fell by 17% to 4,694 units. This decline allowed BMW to claim the top spot for EV sales in Europe, though it's worth noting that the Model Y remained the best-selling EV overall.
EV Market Trends in Europe
Despite BMW's victory, the European EV market as a whole saw a 6% decrease in sales compared to last year. Analysts from JATO Dynamics attribute this dip to fewer government incentives and worries about resale values.
Interestingly, SUVs continue to dominate the European market, making up 54% of total car sales. According to JATO Dynamics analyst Felipe Munoz, the growing variety and affordability of SUVs are driving consumers to switch from traditional cars to these more spacious and comfortable vehicles.
Top Sellers of the Month
While BMW had a strong showing, with the iX1 and i4 making the top 10 list, the Tesla Model Y still took the crown as Europe’s best-selling EV in July. However, it was far from the overall best-seller; that title went to the Dacia Sandero, with 22,398 units sold, followed by the Volkswagen T-Roc and the Toyota Yaris Cross.
