How Much Does it Cost to Buy a Brand New Tesla?

Electric vehicles are largely still an emerging technology, though Tesla’s Model Y recently became one of the world’s best-selling vehicles. With increasing gas prices, EV incentives and continued price cuts throughout this year, the cost of a brand-new Tesla has become more reasonable than ever, leading many to go electric for the first time.

Currently, Tesla’s brand-new vehicles range in price from as low as $40,240 to as high as $108,490, as can be seen on the company’s website and in a recent story from Not a Tesla App. For those who are looking for even lower prices on the vehicles, you can also search Tesla’s inventory options for increased discounts on new vehicles and those used for demos.

Additionally, you may be eligible for a $7,500 EV tax credit on all Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles which can bring prices even further. Certain states also offer their own incentives, which can often be stacked with the federal credit.

At the moment, Tesla produces and sells two sedans, the economy-level Model 3 and the luxury-level Model S. The automaker also offers two SUVs, including the more-affordable Model Y and the premium Model X. Tesla also unveiled its Semi last year for commercial use and the company plans to enter the pickup segment of the market later this year with the upcoming Cybertruck.

Tesla has been hyperfocused on its “Master Plans” since CEO Elon Musk took over. The original Master Plan, which was penned by Musk, explained that Tesla would start by selling an expensive sports car, the first-gen Roadster, before using those profits to build an even cheaper car. Then, the plan says, Tesla would use the profits from the next car to create an even more affordable car, and so on and so forth. You can see the full Master Plan 1 below, as written by Musk in a blog post in 2006.

  • Build a sports car
  • Use that money to build an affordable car
  • Use that money to build an even more affordable car
  • While doing the above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options (Solar Roof, Solar Panels, Supercharging, Powerwall, Megapacks)

While many consider EVs expensive, the Model Y has actually dipped below the price of an average car in the U.S., and the Model 3 is Tesla’s most-affordable vehicle at the moment. The company is also planning to build a more affordable, mass-market EV at an upcoming Gigafactory that’s set to be built in the state of Nuevo León, though it will likely be a few years before these vehicles hit the market.
