Hyundai and Kia Recall Over 200,000 EVs Across the U.S. and Canada

This week, Hyundai and Kia announced a recall impacting more than 208,000 EVs across the U.S. and Canada due to a defect in the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), a critical component in these vehicles.

What’s the Issue?

The ICCU in affected models may experience an electrical fault that prevents the 12-volt battery from charging. If this happens, the vehicle may shift to a “fail-safe” driving mode, gradually reducing power over a span of 20 to 40 minutes. If the 12-volt battery depletes entirely, the vehicle could lose all motive power, posing a potential crash risk.

The recall includes several popular EV models:

• Hyundai:
  • 2022–2024 Ioniq 5
  • 2023–2025 Ioniq 6
  • 2023–2025 Genesis GV60
  • 2023–2025 Genesis GV70 (Electrified)
  • 2023–2024 Genesis G80
• Kia:
  • 2022–2024 EV6

What’s the Fix?

Hyundai and Kia dealerships will inspect the vehicles and replace faulty ICCU components and fuses if needed. Additionally, updated software will be installed to mitigate overvoltage that could damage the ICCU. Repairs will be provided free of charge.

What Should Owners Do?

Hyundai and Kia will notify affected vehicle owners via mail in December 2024 and January 2025. If your vehicle is part of this recall, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with your dealership for inspection and repair.
