In a significant move for the renewable energy sector,
Tesla and Intersect Power have announced a contract for 15.3 GWh of
Megapacks, Tesla’s advanced battery energy storage system. This new agreement, set to extend through 2030, solidifies Intersect Power's position as one of the largest global operators of Megapacks, with nearly 10 GWh of large-scale energy storage expected to be in place by the end of 2027.
Tesla has already supplied Megapacks for Intersect Power’s existing Base Portfolio of solar and storage facilities, which include 2.4 GWh in operation or under construction. More than half of the new Megapack order will be allocated to four major projects in California and Texas, anticipated to be operational by the end of 2027. These projects will feature some of the largest battery installations in the United States. The remaining Megapacks will support additional solar and storage facilities scheduled to come online between 2028 and 2030.
Mike Snyder, Senior Director of Tesla Energy, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Intersect continues to be an exceptional partner, and their development expertise combined with the plug-and-play nature of Tesla’s vertically integrated technology enables the speed and scale needed to enhance grid resilience and support greater renewables integration."
Sheldon Kimber, CEO of Intersect Power, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, saying, "No one in the market can match Tesla’s depth of experience in storage technology. This partnership is the foundation of one of the largest and fastest-growing storage portfolios in the country here at Intersect Power. This storage franchise is the perfect complement to our multi-billion dollar expansion of renewable generation that is expected to more than triple the size of our company over the next three years."
Intersect Power, known for developing, owning, and operating some of the country’s most flexible Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), plans to integrate the new Megapacks at their solar and storage facilities in Texas and California. The Megapacks are slated for delivery in 2025 and 2026 and will be produced at Tesla’s Megafactory in Lathrop, California.
Currently, Intersect Power has 2.4 GWh of Tesla Megapacks either in operation or under construction. This includes 1 GWh at the Oberon solar and storage facility and 448 MWh at the Athos III solar and storage facility in California. Additionally, Intersect Power is installing another 1 GWh of Tesla Megapacks at its Radian and Lumina solar and storage facilities in Texas, which are expected to be fully operational within the year.
