A Factory-Backed Used Tesla Is Now a Real Thing
If buying a Tesla has felt just out of reach, this one is worth paying attention to. Tesla officially launched its Certified Pre-Owned program in the United States and Puerto Rico, giving used car buyers a factory-backed path into Tesla ownership that simply did not exist before.
Tesla sold used vehicles before this, but the new program is a different animal entirely. According to Tesla's official program page:
"Every vehicle listed by the company undergoes a 115-point inspection covering cosmetic, functional and structural components, and receives refurbishment by official Tesla technicians."
The inspection also screens out any vehicle with a history of structural damage or airbag deployment, and every buyer receives a vehicle history report detailing past ownership, title status, and accident records. So buyers know exactly what they are getting before committing.
What makes this program feel meaningfully different from the private used market is who stands behind it. Because Tesla controls its own service network and parts supply chain, the inspection and refurbishment process runs entirely in-house. No third-party certification body, no questions about who did the work or how thoroughly. Tesla techs do it, and Tesla backs the result.
The warranty is the other big piece. Every CPO vehicle ships with a Pre-Owned Limited Warranty covering one year or 10,000 miles, plus whatever remains of the original eight-year battery and drive unit warranty. That kind of coverage on a used vehicle, especially one that could be five or six years old with over 50,000 miles, is genuinely unusual. Legacy automakers have offered similar programs for years, but this is the first time Tesla buyers get the same peace of mind directly from the brand itself.
There are a few extra perks worth knowing about too. Every CPO vehicle comes with one free month of Full Self-Driving Supervised and one month of Premium Connectivity, giving new owners a chance to experience the full Tesla software ecosystem before deciding whether to subscribe.
Pricing is where this gets interesting for buyers on a budget. Certified Pre-Owned Teslas are available starting at around $20,600 for a Model 3 and $25,000 for a Model Y or Model S, with inventory spanning vehicles all the way up to low-mileage Cybertruck Cyberbeast variants above $90,000. For anyone who crossed Tesla off their shopping list because of new car prices, those entry-level numbers change the conversation considerably.
For buyers in California, it is also worth knowing that the state recently ran a MyFirstEV rebate program offering first-time zero-emission vehicle buyers a $3,500 point-of-sale discount. Tesla's allocation was claimed within four days of launch, reflecting strong demand. Buyers who missed that window should keep an eye out for the next allocation cycle, as stacking a state rebate with CPO pricing could bring the entry point even lower.
The full CPO inventory spans the entire Tesla lineup, including the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. Vehicles are listed directly on Tesla's website, so the shopping experience stays within Tesla's own ecosystem rather than sending buyers to third-party platforms. The program is currently available in the US and Puerto Rico only.
One detail worth knowing if FSD is on your wishlist beyond the free trial month: FSD does not permanently transfer with a CPO vehicle. If the previous owner purchased Full Self-Driving outright, that license does not carry over to the new buyer. After the complimentary month, FSD would need to be added separately as a subscription or a purchase.
For buyers who have been watching the used Tesla market but felt uncertain about condition, history, or post-sale support, the CPO program directly addresses all three of those concerns. It is the kind of program that makes buying a used Tesla feel a lot more like buying a new one, just at a price point that opens the door to a much wider range of people.
