Rivian's Launch of R2 Electric SUV Garners Over 68,000 Reservations in a Single Day

Rivian has once again made headlines in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its R2 electric SUV, marking a significant moment for the company. Revealed at the new Laguna showroom, the R2 has quickly captivated the attention of EV enthusiasts, securing over 68,000 reservations in less than 24 hours following its introduction. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe highlighted the vehicle's affordability, with a starting price of $45,000, and its versatile powertrain options, all offering more than 300 miles of range.

The R2, smaller in dimensions compared to its predecessor, the R1S, aligns closely in size with the Tesla Model Y, boasting a length of 4,715 mm and a height of 1,700 mm. This compact, more accessible version of Rivian’s lineup does not compromise on style or the brand's signature design ethos. Among its most praised features is the open-air design, allowing for an innovative way to transport larger items such as surfboards by folding down seats and dropping the rear glass.

In an exciting turn of events, Scaringe also teased the upcoming R3 and the high-performance R3X models, expanding Rivian's portfolio with a crossover twist. The announcement was met with an overwhelming response, as reflected in the staggering number of R2 reservations. Scaringe expressed his gratitude and excitement over the community's reception on social media, emphasizing the strong connection Rivian has with its supporters. To accommodate the surge in demand, Rivian has decided to kickstart R2 production at its Normal, Illinois, plant in the first half of 2026, aiming for an increased annual capacity of 215,000 vehicles. This strategic move underlines Rivian's commitment to innovation and its ambitious vision for the future of electric mobility.
