Tesla Cybertruck Earns Five-Star Safety Rating in First NHTSA Crash Test

Tesla Cybertruck Earns Five-Star Safety Rating in First NHTSA Crash Test

If you’re a Tesla fan or just love electric vehicles (EVs), you’ll want to hear this: the Tesla Cybertruck just passed its first big safety test with flying colors! The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Cybertruck a five-star safety rating, which is the highest score possible. This is great news for anyone who’s thinking about buying a Cybertruck or already owns one. Let’s break it down.

Breaking Down the Crash Test Results

The NHTSA tested the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck. These tests were part of its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). These included frontal, side, and rollover tests designed to evaluate the vehicle’s safety in various collision scenarios.

Frontal Crash Test

In the frontal crash test—where the vehicle collides with a rigid barrier at 35 mph—the Cybertruck scored a five-star rating for the driver and a four-star rating for the front passenger. Tesla said the knee airbags were meant to stay undeployed in this test.

Side Crash Test

The Cybertruck excelled in side-impact testing, securing a five-star rating overall. This category includes two specific tests:

  • Side Barrier Test: Simulates an intersection collision where another vehicle crashes into the Cybertruck’s driver’s side at 38.5 mph. The vehicle earned five stars for both front and rear passengers.

  • Side Pole Test: Measures the impact of a collision with a fixed object (such as a utility pole) at 20 mph. The Cybertruck again received top marks for both front and rear seat protection.

Rollover Resistance Test

In rollover testing, the Cybertruck earned four out of five stars, with the NHTSA reporting a rollover risk of 12.4%. However, during the dynamic test, the truck did not tip over, indicating a stable design despite its angular shape.

A Pattern of Safety Excellence

The NHTSA’s crash tests were performed by Applus+ Idiada Karco Engineering in Adelanto, California, in late 2023, with the final reports published on January 15, 2024. The Cybertruck’s five-star rating continues Tesla’s streak of producing some of the safest vehicles on the road. Every Tesla model tested by the NHTSA—Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y—has received an overall five-star rating.

What This Means for Cybertruck Owners

Tesla focuses on safety, and the Cybertruck’s crash results prove it. While the vehicle’s unconventional design raised questions about its crashworthiness, these test results should provide reassurance to potential buyers. With impressive ratings across multiple categories, the Cybertruck stands as one of the safest electric trucks on the market today.

For those considering a Cybertruck, the five-star rating adds yet another reason to explore Tesla’s latest innovation—combining cutting-edge technology, rugged design, and industry-leading safety standards.
