Tesla is making its way into Africa. An experience-based luxury travel and global conservation company, &Beyond*, recently tapped Tesla in order to reduce their carbon footprint in Botswana. The company announced yesterday that their "Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp recently switched to solar power... reveal[ing] the camp’s newly installed, state-of-the-art off-grid electrical microgrid."

According to &Beyond, this is "the first system of its kind in Botswana and only the second on the African continent... it incorporates a solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant and a Tesla Powerpack [see above] battery energy storage system." So how has this new approach impacted energy consumption thus far? "Since this new system has been installed at &Beyond Xaranna, the generator runtime has been decreased from 24 hours to 5 hours. This 19-hour reduction not only saves diesel, but also decreases the generator services and parts required, decreases the transport costs associated with delivering diesel, decreases the emissions caused by generators and transport trucks, and decreases the noise pollution caused by generators."

The company, &Beyond, notes that they "remain committed to employing the latest technology to ensure [that] our business is as sustainable as possible... [and] the integration of &Beyond Xaranna’s PV plant and Tesla Powerpack was designed to be as visually appealing as possible." The company says that the new system has "proven itself to be a reliable, economic and effective way of reducing one’s carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels."
