Tesla to launch Cybercab in Austin, Texas in August, plans an 80 stall wireless charging station

Tesla  is in full swing to launch the Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas. The automaker hasn’t announced a final date for the launch event. However, it’s expected to take place in the last week of August.

Austin, Texas, the home of Tesla’s Global HQ and Giga Texas, will be the first city to have a fleet of Cybercabs providing autonomous Tesla Robotaxi Service.

The tech & AI-based automaker has been internally testing autonomous Cybercabs in Austin, Texas, since July. Now, it’s time to launch these vehicles for Robotaxi Service to customers.

To streamline the Cybercab robotaxi operations, the automaker has acquired land and filed for permits to set up the charging facility. Interestingly, as the automaker showed in its promo video (watch below), Cybercabs will be charged wirelessly.

Government filings with the City of Austin indicate that Tesla will install 80 wireless chargers at the planned location. Permit documents also reveal the exact location of the Tesla Cybercab charging location, which is:

Cybercab Wireless Charger Project in Austin, Texas

This will be the first-ever dedicated Tesla Cybercab charging station. The architectural drawings and project details indicate that the Cybercabs will draw power from 12 Supercharger V3.5 cabinets in the first phase.

Tesla will install two V4 Supercharger cabinets in the 2nd phase of the project. 48 V4 charger posts will be installed at the Cybercab charging hub on St Elmo Road in Austin.

After completion, this charging station will have a total of 80 wireless charging stalls for the Cybercab autonomous ride-hailing vehicles. Interestingly, the architecture firm’s project files list the location as Tesla Auto Cab.

It’s not clear whether this location will be entirely dedicated to Cybercab charging or whether customer Teslas will be able to Supercharge here as well.

The project documents also reveal that Tesla has leased this location. The landlord is OS ST Elmo LLC.

Tesla has designed the Cybercab robotaxi vehicles differently. The charging system in these vehicles is no exception. The rest of Tesla’s electric vehicles charge like a normal EV, using the NACS charging port and connector.

As we can see in the video below, Tesla Cybercab uses a wireless charging pad under the vehicle. It’s the first Tesla EV that utilizes wireless charging.

It’s not clear how fast these wireless charging docks are, but the automaker must have assessed the feasibility of commercial use and scalability with growing demand for the Robotaxi Service.

Although the Cybercab’s specifications indicate a battery capacity of around 48 kWh, the charging speed of these new wireless charging docks remains unknown.
