Will Model Y ‘Juniper’ Update Earn it Back-to-Back Crowns?
If you've been yearning for a Model Y facelift, you might be in luck. Rumor has it that a Q1 2025 refresh—codenamed Juniper—is coming, and with it, an array of stylish and practical updates. Here’s a deep dive into what we know about the upcoming refresh, and what it could mean for the world’s bestselling SUV.
According to the latest reports from Tesla’s supply chain in China, the refreshed Model Y is set to make its debut in the first quarter of 2025. Despite earlier rumors and Tesla's own statements denying a 2024 refresh, it seems the company is preparing to roll out significant updates early next year. This timeline aligns with the spotting of camouflaged prototypes in California, hinting that a substantial overhaul has been in the works.
The refresh will include two versions: the updated five-seat Model Y and a new seven-seat variant. While the five-seat model is expected to hit the market in Q1 2025, the seven-seat version may not be available until later in the year, and may only roll out in Chinese and European markets. This staggered release approach reflects Tesla’s strategy of tailoring offerings suited to specific regional market demands.
Dubbed “Juniper,” the model will feature design tweaks inspired by the recent Model 3 refresh. Spy shots of covered prototypes reveal updated front and rear bumpers and a subtle nip-tuck to its aerodynamic design. Such changes are likely aimed at enhancing the vehicle’s efficiency without deviating too far from the much-beloved Model Y aesthetic.
Inside, the refresh promises a host of updates designed to elevate the driving experience. The cabin will feature enhanced materials, including upgraded vegan leather upholstery and a redesigned center console with more storage options. The infotainment system will benefit from the latest software improvements, hopefully offering a more intuitive interface and the possibility of expanding third-party app support.
Tesla’s continuous focus on tech advancements means the refreshed Model Y will also see upgrades to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities and driver assistance features, including the highly anticipated crowd favorite, the Actual Smart Summon. The new interface will also share the improvements in navigation and vehicle control that rolled out with the latest Model 3 refresh.
With any luck, the facelift will also bring some tweaks to the electric powertrain to enhance range and that adrenaline inducing acceleration we all know and love. While exact figures are still under wraps, enhancements in battery technology and energy management systems are expected to push the range beyond the current 300 miles of a single charge.
With this well-timed refresh, we expect the Model Y to maintain its competitive edge in the SUV marketplace, where, just last year, the Model Y outsold the ever-so-popular Toyota RAV4. Though exact pricing has yet to be announced, early estimates suggest only a slight increase over current models. Production of the seven-seat version is anticipated to start at Gigafactory Shanghai—a move that’s likely catering to global demand with a focus on markets outside the U.S.
While it’s true, we are still awaiting an official release, the rumors—if true—mark a noteworthy chapter in Tesla’s ongoing design evolution. If all goes well, the world may soon crown the Model Y with a covetous back-to-back title as “The World’s Best Selling SUV”
