Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Lead U.S. EV Sales in 2024
The numbers are in, and it’s clear—Tesla remains a powerhouse in the U.S. electric vehicle market. According to Cox Automotive, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 were the best-selling EVs in 2024, proving their dominance among electric car enthusiasts.
But that’s not all. Tesla’s long-awaited Cybertruck also made waves, landing in the top five EVs sold in the U.S. last year, despite its premium price and limited availability.
Tesla's Market Leadership
Even with a slight dip in overall sales—about 37,000 fewer units compared to 2023—Tesla still sold an estimated 633,000 vehicles in 2024. That’s nearly half of all EVs sold in the U.S., cementing their position as the market leader.
The stars of the show? The Model Y crossover and the Model 3 sedan. Together, these two models accounted for more than 40% of all electric vehicles sold in the country last year. Their sleek designs, impressive range, and advanced tech continue to attract drivers, keeping Tesla ahead of the competition.
Cybertruck’s Strong Debut
The Tesla Cybertruck, with its bold design and cutting-edge features, had a limited release in 2024 with its exclusive “Foundation Series.” Despite this, it became the fifth best-selling EV in the U.S. Its debut shows that even a premium-priced, unconventional pickup can find its place in the growing EV market.
U.S. EV Market Growth
The overall U.S. EV market hit a new record in 2024, with 1.3 million electric vehicles sold, marking a 7.3% increase from 2023. EVs now make up 8.1% of all vehicles sold in the U.S., a significant jump from the previous year’s 7.8%.
Tesla continues to lead the pack, followed by General Motors (114,432 EVs sold) and Ford (97,865 EVs sold). These numbers highlight Tesla’s ability to maintain a stronghold on the market, even as competition heats up.
What’s Next for EVs?
With 2025 on the horizon, industry experts predict another record-breaking year for EV sales. While Tesla’s dominance seems secure for now, the market’s rapid growth means competition will only intensify. Still, with the continued success of the Model Y and Model 3—and the buzz around the Cybertruck—Tesla’s position as a leader in the EV world is tough to beat.
