Your Cybertruck and Powerwall 3 Can Now Power Your Home for Three Days

Tesla has been promising this one since the Cybertruck first launched in November 2023, and it is finally here.

Cybertruck owners with a Powerwall 3 can now use their truck's battery to power their entire home during an outage, a feature Tesla calls Powershare Home Backup. The two systems work together through the same Wall Connector normally used to charge the truck, turning the Cybertruck into what Tesla describes as the equivalent of nine additional Powerwalls.

The official Cybertruck account on X made it simple:

"Powerwall 3 & I can now power your house together. This extends your home backup by over 3 days, equivalent to 9 additional Powerwalls."

A single Powerwall 3 holds 13.5 kWh of energy. The Cybertruck's battery pack sits at 123 kWh. Based on average US household consumption of around 30 kWh per day, that gives you well over three days of backup before the truck runs dry. Both the Powerwall 3 and the Cybertruck's Powershare system can push up to 11.5 kilowatts of power into the home at once, which is enough to run air conditioning, a refrigerator, lighting, and most appliances simultaneously.

Wes Morrill, the Cybertruck's lead engineer, called the integration a first of its kind, describing it as "a seamlessly ambitious feature to integrate two different energy sources into one cohesive grid through the same wall connector used for charging." He also confirmed the rollout separately on X, noting how much the Cybertruck had improved since the first customer units rolled off the production line.

So why did it take so long? The short version is that getting two grid-forming devices, the Powerwall and the Cybertruck, to agree on who manages the home during an outage is a genuinely complex engineering problem. Tesla told owners in October 2024 the feature was coming in 2025. That date slipped. In December 2025, Tesla pushed the target to mid-2026, with Morrill explaining that certifying the integration across multiple Powerwall generations took longer than expected. Thursday's announcement closed that gap for Powerwall 3 owners, and Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility is still on the way before the end of the year.

The rollout is also not instant for everyone. Tesla began emailing eligible Cybertruck owners with a survey to confirm their interest before enabling the feature, and enablement is being staged by location rather than switched on for every qualified home at once. For context, this is not the first time Powershare has powered a home. Since 2024, Cybertruck owners without a Powerwall could already run whole-home backup through a Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector, which runs around $1,970 excluding installation. What is new now is that Powerwall 3 owners no longer need that separate gateway. The Wall Connector they already use for charging is all that is needed.

For anyone considering building this setup from scratch, here is what the investment looks like. Cybertruck owners who already have a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector do not need any additional hardware. The feature activates through a software update and the survey Tesla is sending to eligible owners. For those starting from scratch, a Powerwall 3 kit runs around $16,000 including installation, and the Powershare bundle for homes without a Powerwall comes in at around $1,970 before installation. Given that a single Powerwall 3 paired with a Cybertruck effectively replaces what would otherwise require ten Powerwalls worth of storage, the value proposition for owners already in the Tesla ecosystem is significant.

For Cybertruck owners who already have the hardware in place, this is a meaningful upgrade that brings everything together. The truck that was already capable of powering tools on a job site, charging another EV in a parking lot, and keeping a home running through an outage can now do all of that while working in sync with a Powerwall, automatically managing the energy flow between solar, the grid, and the vehicle's battery in real time. That is a genuinely different level of home energy resilience than most people have access to today.
