Lighted Emblem for Tesla Model S

The Lighted Emblem gives your Tesla Model S a truly distinctive look by providing a variety of selectable rear lighting effects -- it's a real attention-getter. The Lighted Emblem replaces Tesla's factory plastic emblem part at the rear of your Model S and is connected to power and turn signal circuits in the trunk and lift gate hatch. Each letter in the emblem is illuminated, and special effects can be customized and controlled from a smartphone Bluetooth app. The color, brightness, flash frequency, and sequence of each letter can be independently controlled according to each owner’s preferences. See "Video" tab below for a product demonstration.

Specifications

The Lighted Emblem is lit by miniature LEDs called neopixels that are arrayed on a printed circuit board behind the emblem letters. The circuit board itself is mounted on the back of the precision-milled aluminum piece.  The emblem letters are 3D printed and glued into the Lighted Emblem part.

Note: The LEDs in the Lighted Emblem have an expected lifetime of about 40,000 operational hours. This means that they would last 10-12 years if they were turned on for about 10 hours a day.

The Lighted Emblem is machined out of a solid block of aluminum, the emblem can be ordered in a Chrome Plated version for the look of the factory chrome plastic emblem part or in a color that corresponds to your factory paint job.

Lighted Emblem is pre-bent to fit the curvature of the Tesla Model S lift gate and has completely open spaces at the ends over the taillights (like the new factory part). This eliminates any issues of moisture accumulation under a plastic lens (which occurred in older Model S versions of the factory part). Note: the factory part is made of chrome plated plastic – our Lighted Emblem part is superior in quality and durability.

Lighted Emblem is available in an aluminum Chrome Plated version for the look of the factory part and is also available in the following colors (corresponding to Model S factory colors):

- Signature Red
- Red Multi-Coat
- Solid Black
- Matte Black
- Obsidian Black Metallic
- Green Metallic
- Brown Metallic
- Titanium Metallic
- Silver Metallic
- Solid White
- Pearl White Multi-Coat
- Midnight Silver Metallic
- Deep Blue Metallic
- Gray Metallic

Note: If you're unsure of your precise factory paint color, you may check your vehicle documentation or contact Tesla for color confirmation of your Model S. In addition, your Tesla Model S VIN number contains the codes for the color of your car.

IMPORTANT:  In matching car paint colors, age, weathering of the original factory paint, and other factors make a “perfect match” nearly impossible. While we can’t guarantee a "perfect" match, painted versions will correspond well to your Model S color.  If a perfect color match is a dominant concern, we recommend that you order the Chrome Plated version.

FAQ

Is the installation of the Lighted Emblem a DIY (Do It Yourself) project?

No, it is imperative that product installation be performed by a professional installer. Therefore, professional installation is required.

Where can I find a professional installer?

There are many competent aftermarket installation locations (they often specialize in car audio installs) in your locale. It may be helpful to locate a professional installer who has had experience with the Tesla Model S and comes recommended by others. We've created extensive installation materials (including detailed installation instructions, see 'Installation' tab) in order to assist a professional installer with guidance as he/she installs Lighted Emblem.

What should I do if I'm unsure of my precise Model S factory paint color?

If you choose not to order the "Chrome Plated" option and prefer a factory paint color for Lighted Emblem, you should confirm your factory paint color pre-purchase. Note: if you're unsure of your precise factory paint color, you may check your vehicle documentation or contact Tesla for color confirmation of your Model S. In addition, your Tesla Model S VIN number contains the codes for the color of your car.

If I order a painted Lighted Emblem will it perfectly match the color of my car?

In matching car paint colors, age, weathering of the original factory paint, and other factors make a “perfect match” nearly impossible. While we can’t guarantee a "perfect" match, painted versions will correspond well to your Model S color.  If a perfect color match is a dominant concern, we recommend that you order the "Chrome Plated" version.

How do I maintain the Lighted Emblem?

The "Polished Aluminum" finish requires an application of Carnuba or other hard wax every 2-3 months.  This is necessary to prevent fading of the aluminum polish.  The painted versions should be given the same care as the rest of your car’s paint.  The electronics need no maintenance.

How long will it take a professional to install the Lighted Emblem?

Installation is a job for a professional installer. However, for a professional, it’s a relatively straightforward task (we've provided extensive instructions) that can be completed in about 2-3 hours.  However, we advise that you get an time and cost estimate, because these may vary from installer to installer.

How much should professional installation cost?

We suggest you get an upfront quote from your professional installer, but, typically prices can range from $60/hr. - $150/hr. depending on your location. As we noted earlier, some professional installers take as little as two hours some take more.  Sometimes this varies based on if the installer has significant experience working with prior Tesla customers.

What kind of modifications to my car does installation of the Lighted Emblem require?

Very few. The stock rear emblem must be removed and replaced with the lighted emblem.  Taps are made to some existing wires to provide power and signals for operation of the light effects. But everything can easily be returned to stock condition.

Will the Lighted Emblem affect the functioning of my car’s electrical system?

No. The Lighted Emblem is powered by the car’s 12V system and connections are made to existing 12V lines and ground. Signals for the lighting effects tap the 12V output of existing brake, reverse, turn signal, and taillight connections.

How much electrical power does the Lighted Emblem require when it’s functioning? When it's off?

The Lighted Emblem draws very little power, only hundreds of milliamps. When it is off, it consumes no power.

Will the Lighted Emblem run down my 12V battery?

No. The current draw of the Lighted Emblem is so low that it would take (estimated) about a month to drain the 12V battery if it was turned on and car was not plugged in or driven.

How will operation of the Lighted Emblem be affected by wet and inclement weather?

Not a bit. The Lighted Emblem is completely waterproof and not affected by extreme cold or heat.

How is the Lighted Emblem made and how is it different from the Tesla Emblem?

The chrome strip (called an applique) on the rear tailgate of every Tesla Model S is made of chrome-plated plastic.  It’s attached with a number of clips and double sided tape. Depending on the model year there are slight variations (for example new Model S’s have an open area in both ends that had a plastic lens in older models).

The Lighted Emblem is machined out of aircraft grade aluminum and the openings for the emblem letters are machined out of the piece.  Translucent 3D printed letters are glued into the openings and a PCB with LED Neopixels attached to the back, aligned over the letters.  The Lighted Emblem is also pre-bent to flex-fit to the curvature of the lift gate.  It attaches to the lift gate using the familiar system of clips and double-sided tape as the original factory part.

How does the SmartPhone Controller APP work?

The SmartPhone app gives you complete control over the operation and lighting effects of the Lighted Emblem.  For example, you can set if and how it operates with the brake lights, taillights, turn signals, and reverse lights. There are also custom settings for lighting the Emblem green when your car is charging, disco mode, Cylon/Kitt, Fade effects and others, but only when your car is stationary.  The Smartphone app gives you complete control over these light effects, even enabling you to turning them on automatically when your car has been parked for 3 minutes.

How do I get the SmartPhone Controller APP?

We will provide you with details after you order the Lighted Emblem. The app is available for both Android and iOS.

Will the Lighted Emblem violate traffic and/or other vehicle laws in my state?

No. The colors and position of the Lighted Emblem meets state safety laws regarding rear lights. In fact, the Lighted Emblem electronics are designed so that only legal lighting effects will display while the car is moving. Any other effects are automatically disabled when the car is moving or put into drive. However, when the car is parked or otherwise stationary, all the custom lighting effects are legal.  But as we indicate, only legal effects are operational when the car is moving, on the road, or otherwise mobile.

Do I have to have the Smartphone Controller app?

Without the smartphone app, the Lighted Emblem operates to default settings and the user cannot customize any lighting effects.  For this reason the smartphone app is recommended if you’d like more custom features.

What is the range of the Smartphone Controller app?

About 40-50 feet.

Will the Lighted Emblem leak toxic or other foreign material that might damage my car?

None of the chemical or physical properties of the Lighted Emblem can damage the car or its painted surfaces.

How will the Lighted Emblem affect service on my car?

Not at all. It will not interfere with routine service protocols.

What is the return policy and warranty on the Lighted Emblem?

The Lighted Emblem is warranted to be free of defects that affect its operation for a period of four (4) years from the time of purchase.  If it fails to operate or displays unacceptable effects it will be replaced free of charge, including shipping costs.  However the owner will be responsible for any and all removal and reinstallation costs.

Only returns of uninstalled Lighted Emblems in perfect condition are accepted.  Such returns are subject to a restocking charge.

What happens if my Lighted Emblem doesn’t work or seems to have something wrong with it?

If your Lighted Emblem fails or functions improperly immediately after your professional installer installs the product, please have your professional installer contact us at EVANNEX for guidance/advice. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, a replacement can be provided free-of-charge.

How does the Lighted Emblem work with the taillights, brakes, reverse, and turn signals?

The Lighted Emblem is installed so it lights red with the tail lights, sequences the illuminated letters from right to left or left to right with the turn signals, brightens when the brakes are applied, and turns white when the car is placed in reverse. During daylight, when the taillights are off, the Emblem is off until the brakes, turn signals, or reverse are engaged. It lights up in these circumstances.

Does installation require permanent changes to my car that can’t be reversed?

No. The Lighted Emblem can be removed at any time, the wiring disconnected and removed, and the factory chrome part (called an applique) placed back in the original position, restoring the car to its original condition.

Can the Lighted Emblem be vandalized or stolen off my car?

Nothing is vandal proof, but the Lighted Emblem is very difficult to remove without knowledge of how it is attached.

If it gets wet will the Lighted Emblem affect my electrical system or create problems such as electrical shorts?

No. Lighted Emblem is protected by the car’s fuse system and the Lighted Emblem is completely waterproof.

What if my installer has questions that I can’t answer?

We have provided written installation instructions that can help guide a professional in the installation of the Lighted Emblem. Please have your professional installer reference the "Installation" tab on this page (prior to his install). Note: written instructions are also provided in the package you'll receive post-order. If there are other questions, please contact us.

What provides the light for the Lighted Emblem?

The Lighted Emblem is lit by miniature LEDS called neopixels that are arrayed on a printed circuit board behind the emblem letters. The circuit board itself is mounted on the back of the aluminum piece.  The emblem letters are 3D printed and glued into the Lighted Emblem part.

How long will the Lighted Emblem last and the LEDs continue to work?

The LEDs in the Lighted Emblem have an expected lifetime of about 40,000 operational hours. This means that they would last 10-12 years if they were turned on for about 10 hours a day.

When I buy the Lighted Emblem is everything needed for installation included – wiring, connectors, etc.?

Parts required for installation (as noted in our installation instructions) are included. Note: every installation may vary slightly and as a consequence your professional installer might use an additional connector or some other item not in the kit. Professional installers typically acquire these from readily available sources. We do not provide the tools needs for the installation.

What tools are required for installation?

Very few (and no special) tools are needed: professional installers will have everything necessary: wire cutters, voltmeter, wire strippers, electrical tape, etc. Additional information is provided in the installation instructions.
